Karen Cheng from San Francisco, CA and Thao Nguyen from Vietnam and Australia built Star Anise Foods (SAF) - from their love of Vietnamese noodle soups, particularly Pho, a traditional, healthy rice noodle soup. SAF is a newly founded San Francisco, California-based, woman-owned all natural dry foods company focused on bringing Vietnamese noodles soups to the US market. SAF's passion is to create sustainable and socially responsible opportunities for women in Vietnam with a singular focus to produce wholesome and natural products that encourage a healthy lifestyle in the US. Our first product, Happy Pho, developed from a traditional recipe of Thao's grandparents in the 1920s, combines noodles made of brown rice and green tea with a spice packet of all natural/organic spices. At 6 months pregnant, Karen travelled internationally to Vietnam to meet her partner Thao in June 2009 to start their company. They focused, worked 16-18 hour days, made a lot of Pho and launched their first generation of nutritious Vietnamese noodle soup products which should land on shelves of Northern California Whole Foods Stores in early 2010. A mom 'to be' in a few days, Karen is still cooking passionately in her San Francisco kitchen while her partner Thao continues to forge ahead their desire to strengthen and advance women and farmer enterprises. This dynamic dual has crazy passion for noodles but equally important, they want to change how food is produced and share their wholesome products with you.
