This world première recording is the fruit of lengthy musicological research by Christophe Rousset. Together with a cast of great talent and breathtaking individual performances from Cyril Auvity and Céline Scheen, Rousset invites us to rediscover Jean-Baptiste Lully s opera Bellérophon. First performed on January 31, 1679, it ran for nine months at the Palais Royal. It is not surprising that the work immediately endeared itself to the king. It features an adaptation of a mythical story that describes a hero who practices restraint and moderation toward the foes he vanquishes a none-too-subtle reference to the Sun King s recent victories over the Dutch, the Spanish and the Holy Roman Emperor. The set features deluxe, CD-Book packaging and a full libretto with English and German translations.
