Le Temple de la Gloire is the only opera with a libretto by Voltaire that was performed during the 18th century and displaying the touch of a rascal, Voltaire altered the intention of his commission from the original instruction to celebrate Louis XVs military victory at Fontenay to a procession into his invented Temple of Public Happiness. Rameau was a willing partner and composed some of his most original and most beautiful music for this opera. A rarely recorded opera given a fine performance by the ensemble Les Agremens and the Choeur de Chambre de Namur conducted by Guy Van Waas.
