Hello! We want to help ensure you are purchasing the right docking station for your needs and your laptop's capabilities. The problem most users have with USB-C docks is compatibility with their laptop. So, here are the two things your laptop should have to get the most out of our SD4620 dock:
- USB-C port that supports USB-C Alt mode
- Power Delivery (PD) support
– You don't need this to use our dock, but if your laptop doesn't accept power delivery, you'll need to use your existing power supply to power your laptop.
Another note, this docking station is a new version of an older model. The two main complaints about the old model were bandwidth prioritization and not working with Mac OS. With this new model we have taken care of the bandwidth prioritization by feeding a maximum stable video resolution and frame rate, thereby allowing all other ports to function at full capacity. For Mac OS users, we now have a different model (part # K33468US).
Now, here are FAQ’s and more detail regarding the above.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Can I use any USB-C cable to connect this dock to my computer's USB-C port?
A: No, we highly recommend you use the included USB-C cable, which is specifically designed to carry video, power, and all other data. Most USB-C cables are not designed to do this, though you can find aftermarket cables with the USB 3.1 specifications
Q: Can I use this with a MacBook?
A: No, we recommend our part #K33468US
Q: What video resolution does this dock support?
A: our SD4620 supports 4K Ultra HD video (4096x2160 @ 30Hz) to a single monitor, or 1080P (1920x1080 @ 60Hz) with a dual monitor setup, using the HDMI and/or DisplayPort video outputs
Q: Can I use two external monitors with this dock?
A: Yes, our SD4620 dock can power two external displays via the DisplayPort and HDMI video outputs, for laptops which have USB-C Displayport Alt Mode built in. USB-C Alt Mode allows video signals from a laptop to be carried over the USB-C cable to the dock. The dock takes care of the rest, sending the signal to your external monitors. Not all USB-C equipped laptops have this USB-C Alt Mode standard built in. Some manufacturers are better at listing it in their manuals and online than others. If it's not clear to you, then dig deeper by calling your manufacturer
Q: Can I use an adapter to go from the dock's HDMI or DisplayPort connection to My monitor?
A: No, only an HDMI cable or a DisplayPort cable for a straight connection to like ports on the monitor will work. So, if you will use a dual monitor setup, one monitor will need an HDMI input and the other will need a DisplayPort input; and the cables you must use are HDMI to HDMI and DisplayPort to DisplayPort
Q: Will this dock supply power to My laptop?
A: Yes, our SD4620 dock, will supply 60W of power to laptops which have power delivery (PD) over USB-C built in. Not all USB-C equipped laptops have this Power Delivery standard. You can still use this dock if your laptop doesn't support Power Delivery over USB-C, by simply powering your laptop using the power cord that came with your laptop while still using all the other features of the dock. If it's not clear to you whether your laptop supports Power Delivery over USB-C, then you might need to dig deeper by calling your manufacturer. If your laptop came with a power supply that has a USB-C tip (versus the traditional barrel-end) then it most likely supports the Power Delivery standard
Q: Is 60W enough to power My laptop?
A: If your laptop requires more than 60W, it probably does not support power Delivery over USB-C.
Q: Will this dock work with a Thunderbolt 3 port on my laptop?
A: Yes, Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C are mechanically the same. And Thunderbolt 3 allows for video over the USB-C cable. Be aware that some laptops with Thunderbolt 3 don't accept power delivery because 60W is not enough for them, so check your device's specifications. Using a USB-C dock with TB3 will give you USB-C speeds. The dock will not work with older Thunderbolt 2 or 1 ports
Q: Does this dock have an Ethernet port
A: Yes, this dock has a Gigabit Ethernet port and the dock sends your Ethernet signal to your computer from the dock over the USB-C cable.
