On July 8, 1947, the Roswell Army Air Field (RAAF) public information officer Walter Haut in Roswell, New Mexico, issued a press release stating personnel from the field's 509th Operations Group recovered a "flying disk" that crashed in a ranch near Roswell, sparking intense media interest. Later that day, the press reported that Commanding General of the Eighth Air Force Roger Ramey stated a weather balloon was recovered by the RAAF personnel instead. A press conference was held, featuring debris said to be from the crashed object, which seemed to confirm the weather balloon description. It wasn't a balloon!
