Mint is synonymous with all things pristine and clean. Menthol is a compound that naturally occurs in mint leaves, and our menthol crystals are made from distilled peppermint oil that's dried into concentrated little gems for greater potency and easier handling. Just one menthol crystal has twice the potency of the same measure of peppermint oil, with greater purity in flavor and fragrance. ...so what does it do? Menthol activates the temperature-sensitive nerves in our skin that respond to cold, which gives the cooling sensation mint and menthol are known for, just like chilies and spicy things make our skin and palate feel hot. Just a hint of mint adds an exciting sensation to desserts, liqueurs, cake frosting, breath mints, and much more.

Mint is pretty tasty, but it's also a terrific component to add to homemade topical remedies for scrapes, burns, itches, and muscle aches. Sore joints and allergic rashes can feel hot to the touch, but some menthol crystals and camphor melted in coconut oil and beeswax make a great all-natural cooling massage crème. Stuffed sinuses? Menthol can also soothe inflamed nasal passages when dissolved in hot water for a steam cleaning inhalant. Even a sore throat can benefit from some menthol crystals in hot water with chamomile, cinnamon, and shredded ginger for a nice, comforting minty mint tea with a dash of honey. Menthol is no cure-all, but it's the next best thing.
