Carrying excess weight can be an extremely emotional experience and is usually tied to an imbalance in our lives. For even if we are doing everything “right” – eating healthy, counting calories, and exercising for a certain duration – our beliefs about our bodies and what changes are possible for us to achieve have a huge impact on the results we attain.

My weight struggles have always been intimately tied to what is occurring in my life. The pounds piled on at a time when I was experiencing tremendous losses and major life transitions. While living abroad, my “European diet” of wine and cheese served as the means to self-soothe while living so remotely and feeling disconnected. But probably the hardest admission I will ever make is that my excess weight was the reason why I was rejected by the man I loved and promised to spend the rest of my life with.

All the traditional weight loss methods failed me. The trendy diet plans, exotic foods and body creams, Dr. Oz recommended miracle pills, and expensive body sculpting treatments. It always felt as if something crucial was missing – a mind-body connection.

It wasn’t until I began meditating and connecting with my body that I was able to discover a deep sense of compassion for myself and my body. I was finally able to acknowledge just how difficult some of my life transitions were and how the extra weight was only trying to protect me from the bumps and bruises I was experiencing. I started to appreciate what my body did for me in true survival and self-preservation mode. My body took care of me when there was no one else.

I made a commitment to myself that I was going to take off my excess weight as a matter of lifestyle, not as a temporary action. In fact, the word “diet” wasn’t even going to be uttered during my weight loss process. I also decided that I wasn’t going to give up my favorite, most satisfying foods and was going to retrain my brain to believe wonderful things about my body.

What I discovered along my weight loss journey was a mindful and balanced approach to connecting with our bodies in a compassionate way. Listening to our inner dialogue and revising negative thoughts, considering what our bodies really need and desire, and creating new beliefs that support us in achieving and maintaining our weight loss goals.

This approach is as simplistic as it is instinctive in nature. It is a gentle reminder to open our minds and hearts and trust in ourselves. No outside authority has a one-size-fits-all secret to weight loss – this personal knowledge comes from within and is unique for everyone.

May we come to love and appreciate ourselves in the most satisfying and fulfilling ways. For our outer bodies may shift, but our value is infinite.
