Mahogany Obsidian
Mahogany Obsidian is natural glass obsidian that has iron inclusions creating the mahogany colored stripes and swirls in it.
As with all varieties of Obsidian, Mahogany Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass and can be found in areas with volcanic activity including Afghanistan, Japan, Mexico, South America, and parts of the western United States.
The distinctive coloring comes from high concentrations of iron.
Obsidian forms when lava cools and whilst it is mineral-like, it is not considered to be a true mineral because its composition is too complex and it does not have a crystalline structure.
Due to its lack of cleavage, conchoidal fracture and acute edges when broken, it has been used to make smooth sharp surgical scalpel blades, and arrow heads blades
Healing properties
Many spiritualists believe mahogany obsidian is a stone of strength - giving the wearer the ability to follow one's own convictions even in the face of adversity and bringing strength in times of need.
A stone of reflection, this form of obsidian is said to help with inner reflection, mirroring our flaws while bringing self-acceptance, helping with decision making, and allowing us to make significant change in difficult areas of our lives.
Physically, many spiritualists believe mahogany obsidian can heal gums and improve circulation.
obsidian Gemstone jewelry Care and Cleaning
To clean your obsidian, simply use soapy water and a soft cloth. Be sure to rinse well to remove soapy residue.
As with most gemstones, ultrasonic cleaners and steamers are not recommended.
Always remove any jewelry or gemstones before exercising, cleaning or engaging in harsh physical activities such as sports.
It is best to wrap gemstones in soft cloth or place them inside a fabric-lined jewelry box.
