Obsidian, also known as volcanic glass, forms from lava that cools almost immediately upon eruption, usually into water. Despite being dark in color, obsidian is made up of microcrystalline quartz, demonstrated by sharing the hardness and conchoidal fracture often exhibited by quartz.
