Stainless Steel is an alloy of iron; however, stainless steel is much more expensive due to it's non-corrosive (rust) characteristics. So, use caution when purchasing silver plated "stainless steel". If the price is low, it is likely silver plated iron. As a fellow jewelry artist, I share as much information as possible so you can make an informed decision. Iron is inexpensive and plated in 6 colors (see below). More prone to rust than other metals, I have had good success with the platings, but no plating lasts forever.
