More than a magnificent performance of Poulenc’s gripping and deeply moving masterwork, this recording is a document of the singers and conductor who, at the Paris Opéra in 1957, gave the French premiere of Dialogues des Carmélites. The pivotal role of Blanche was written for Denise Duval, the composer’s favoured soprano, while Régine Crespin (Madame Lidoine) and Rita Gorr (Mère Marie) stand as two of the 20th century’s towering interpreters of French opera.
