Rainshadow umbrellas were developed over the wettest year in Seattle's history. We tried many different umbrellas and couldn't find any that stayed waterproof and held their shape. Or even one that was flexible enough to handle the wind that we get. Over time we developed this umbrella to stand up to heavy use in all types of weather. It's great for carrying around in the car or your bag. Small enough to stow away but definitely large enough to cover you when you need it. We tested many different open and close mechanisms and found the one that was reliable and strong but not so hard to open that neither we nor our kids could open it.
