The Lokta paper comes from a non-tree source, the Lokta bush, which grows on the southern slopes of the Nepali Himalayas between 5,250 and 13,000 feet. When properly cut, the lokta bushes produce three to eight new, fast-growing shoots making Lokta paper one of the most sought after non-tree papers. The inner bark of the lokta bush is removed by hand and then "cooked" into a mash which is then carefully spread on boxed screens and set to dry in the Himalayan sun creating one of the toughest and most resilient papers resistant to tearing, mold, and insect damage. The paper is 100% bleach free and is handmade in the rural, high-altitude villages of Nepal utilizing the traditional deckle/uneven page edges. Lokta paper has a beautiful texture containing natural flecks from the bush and can vary slightly in thickness from page to page due to the unique handcrafting process. The Sage Journal's unique coloring is made from a combination of Indigo (blue) and Pomegranate (yellow from the pomegranate skins) dyes mixed together to produce the popular Green Sage coloring.
