For a Roman legionary it is custom to wear their gladius on the right-side. Why the right-side, do you wonder? Since a right handed swordsman naturally draws his sword from his left hip, one may wonder why the Romans didn't do it this way. Apparently, this was so was to reduce the risk of cutting the soldier standing to one's left when drawing the sword. If a legionary mistakenly hits the soldier standing to his right with his sword, he will only bump the man's shield - whereas if he accidently struck the man to his left, he will risk cutting the man's unprotected right arm or side. When legionaries wore lorica segmentata armor, a baldric was required to hang the gladius. The baldrics for these gladiuses did not have any fasteners they just simply slipped over the users head and shoulder. The Roman Gladius Legionary Leather Baldric is handmade right down to the stitching. It is constructed of fine quality tanned and treated genuine leather. Each loop unscrews to hook around the scabbard rings of a Roman gladius. This baldric is a must while dressing is period attire as a Roman legionary. Sword not included.
