Are both sides 1/4"?
Both sides are not 1/4"; the adapter end(female) is 3.5mm(1/8") while the jack(male) is 1/4"(6.35mm).

Can you use this to listen to what your playing from your amp?
Most headphones that will benefit from an amp will already have a 1/4" jack option built in but yeah, it should be fine. If you have high impedance headphones, or headphones that you want to add an extra kick to, using this adapter will work just fine.
