With this new recording, Bruno Cocsets Les Basses Réunies, in partnership with talented Italian guest gambist Guido Balestracci, propose a journey back to 17th c. England, centering on the work of the largely ignored or forgotten Tobias Hume (c. 1569-1645), an emblematic musician of the viola da gamba or, more precisely, the lyra viol. Hume was a pioneer with his pieces, which date from the instruments early history. At once refined and richly naive, with many bearing eccentric titles, these works shine forth in their freedom from the eras academic concepts.
