You need to unscrew them to expose the batteries, where you will find a piece of paper protecting the contact to prevent activation during shipping. 2. The unit comes with an adapter to allow a person to screw it to a U.S. standard valve stem size. 3. You must screw the plastic unit together to activate the light. A good thing, so you can lightly unscrew the unit when in storage. 4. The unit sticks out beyond the rim due to the 1/2-inch adapter mentioned in #2. A good thing for added visibility. A bad thing for chance of damage. 5. Shipping was timely (3 weeks faster than advertised). Less than a week. 6. Packaging was very protective (Bubble-Wrap Lined Envelope)
