Torpedoes Away!, first published in 1946, is the story of the U.S. Navy's submarine fleet in the Pacific during the first eighteen months of World War Two. The book features accounts of submarines including the USS Trout, Sea Raven, Pollack, and Skipjack; their commanders and crews, and details of a number of missions. Torpedoes Away! also describes the mechanical workings of submarines and torpedoes, and provides a history of submarines from their earliest days in the 1800s. To prepare the book, author Maxwell Hawkins conducted extensive research in the archives of the Navy Department and also interviewed many submariners about their experiences in the Pacific. Included are 2 pages of maps.
