Maple syrup is a sustainable product which can be tapped in your own back yard, neighborhood, or farm. This kit contains the food grade taps and tubing. All you need to do is drill a 1 1/2" deep hole using a 5/16" drill bit into the maple tree. Gently tap the spout into the tree. Then make another 5/16" hole in the top of a milk jug, soda bottle, or other clean food grade container. Insert the end of the tube into the container and you are tapping and collecting your own maple sap to make syrup. This is a fun and easy project for a family, school group, or outdoor enthusiast. Great outdoor activity. Check with your local cooperative Extension office to see when tapping season is for your area. ***DO NOT DRIVE THIS SPOT ALL THE WAY INTO THE TREE.*** The hole in the maple tree only needs to be drilled approximately 1 1/2" into the tree. Using these smaller diameter spouts will cause 30-35% less damage than the tradition 7/16" spouts. The hose barbs for the drop line to attach to are designed for an ultra aggressive hold that locks tubing on to eliminate leaks. The heavy head makes tapping the spout in with a hammer very easy using a light wrist tap while choking up on the hammer. During tapping the spout will seal tight and the hammer will bounce back off the spout to a "thud" sound signaling the tree saver spout is tightly installed. It is better to slightly under tap the spout and tighten it later, than to overdrive the spout which will cause additional damage from splitting, which also results in a leak. Our tubing is specially made, light blue in color, making it draw the least amount of sun light, and the easiest to see the flow of maple sap in. Light blue is also highly visible throughout the maple woods year round making it easy to spot a line that is down or apart. These are the highest quality maple tapping supplies.
