The locally known Jatamansi plant grows wild at 10,000 foot elevation in the Himalayas. True Spikenard Essential Oil, produced by rhizomes and roots of the Jatamansi is blue to blue-green right after distillation, thereafter gradually changing into a golden amber.
Spikenard Essential Oil was discovered by the Ancient Egyptians, used as a luxurious aromatic, including anointing Cleopatra and King Tut's tomb.
In India, Spikenard was used in Ayurvedic practices in hair preparations to calm the mind and prevent hair loss. It is said to be the one used by Mary to anoint Jesus' feet as described in John 12:3.
