To replace the flowers just pull the insert up by the flange, throw out the old flowers. Place fresh new flowers and water and place back into the in ground vase. When you decide you're not going to replace flowers (cold weather) you simply pull out the insert, unscrew the flange from the top, and screw it to the bottom of insert.
