In music history the name of Johann Christian Schieferdecker (1679-1732) appears mostly as a footnote, although he shared the orchestra pit during opera performances with many of the greats and worked with them, including Reinhard Keiser, Johann Mattheson and George Frideric Handel! None of his operas have survived today. His sacred music output includes three cantatas for solo Bass and strings which are presented here for the first time, performed in a very impressive interpretation by Klaus Mertens and the Hamburger Ratsmusik.
