Probably the most famous classical work by a British composer, The Planets was an instant success, admired as much for its originality of musical thought as for its brilliant orchestration and inspired melodies. Mehta gives an impeccable reading of Holst's score, the orchestral playing deserves the same adjective and the recording is first-rate. Gramophone review
