It supposedly started with Chinese farmers that used similar objects to the piñata in ceremonies to ensure a fruitful harvest. Around the 16th century, Spanish missionaries introduced the piñata to the Aztec Indians in Mexico. In the ceremonies, the missionaries filled the piñatas with fruit, candy and coins to represent temptations as they tried to convert the Aztecs to Christianity. Piñatas have become popular at birthday parties in Latin America and the United States. They come in all shapes, sizes and colors and are filled with candy, toys, confetti and more.
