Walter Taylor was considered the closest to Lee of all his staff officers and his writings of Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia are considered important. Taylor new the strength of Lee's forces in all engagements and wrote his dispatches, greeted visitors and rode back with Lee to his surrender. This reissue makes Taylor's work available for the first time in more than half a century and includes additional observations and notations.
