Impressario Serge Diaghilev commissioned a ballet from Igor Stravinsky for his newly-formed Ballets Russes, to be performed their first season in Paris in 1909, when the first composer he approached, Liadov, was unable. Stravinsky came up with a tale from Russian mythology, the Firebird, and the ballet was premiered on June 25, 1910. It was a great success. This recording is the complete 1910 score of that original ballet. Stravinsky revised it in later years, and there are several different performing editions. Many recordings have just the ballet "suite" but this is the compete ballet. Amsterdam's Concertgebouw Orchestra is conducted by Sir Colin Davis, in this Philips compact disc recording.
