For the first time in its history, Documenta, traditionally held in Kassel, Germany, will be bilocated as it expands to Athens, Greece. South as a State of Mind, a biannual journal founded in Athens in 2012, will publish four Documenta 14 editions semiannually, edited by American poet and critic Quinn Latimer and Director of Documenta 14, Adam Szymczyk, until the exhibition’s opening in 2017. Compiling research, critique and literature, South as a State of Mind parallels the work on the exhibition and helps frame its concerns. Writing and publishing are an integral part of Documenta 14, and this journal, a site of essays, projects, interviews and features, heralds that process. With writing by artists, poets, scholars, architects and filmmakers, the first volume examines forms of displacement and dispossession, and the modes of resistance found within them.
