“Get aboard, Major,” a medic yelled. “The enemy is right behind you.” Ruby Bradley ignored the warning and ran back to the ambulance. One more wounded man was waiting. Bullets flew from the trees like angry wasps. There was little feeling in her frozen fingers but Ruby grabbed her end of the litter. “Let’s go,” she said. “Run, Major, run!” Voices from the plane shouted. They could see enemy soldiers emerging from the thick copse of trees. Strong hands reached down to grab Ruby’s end of the litter and quickly pulled it aboard. More strong hands reached for Ruby and the Corporal and threw them into the plane. With engines roaring the plane took off down the runway followed by a hail of bullets. Ruby picked herself up and glanced back through a side window. The ambulance she left moments earlier exploded in a tower of flame.
