Breaking with the traditional division of labor practiced by Hiroshige, Hokusai, and virtually every other Japanese printmaker who preceded them, the ssaku hanga (creative prints) artists handled every step of print productionthey painted the original pictures, carved the woodblocks, and printed the images.
