Artist, craftsman, teacher, and author, William Seltzer Rice moved to California in 1900 to teach art in the Stockton public schools. He traveled, sketched, and painted throughout the state and familiarized himself with its history, flora, and fauna. In 1910 he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, continuing his career in teaching and taking an active part in the Arts and Crafts movement. He worked in several media but favored block printing as a means of bringing original art within reach of many people.
