About the artist: Autumn's Garland / Guirlande automnale, 1915–1916, by Tom Thomson (1877–1917). Oil on canvas, 48 x 52 in. / Huile sur toile, 122,5 x 132,2 cm. Tom Thomson (Canadian, 1877–1917) was an avid outdoorsman who loved the wild, rough beauty of northern Ontario. While supporting himself as a wilderness guide and forest ranger in Algonquin Park, Tomson created hundreds of small sketches and oil paintings of the back country. Many of his oils were executed in only a few hours but are nonetheless emblematic of Canadian art. Autumn's Garland captures the rugged style and superb use of color that are trademarks of this remarkable artist.
